‘Iron Man’ Flies Towards ‘Avengers’: Sick Day Stash

  • Posted on May 3, 2012 at 10:00 am

“I’m here to talk to you about The Avengers initiative.” And with those few ominous words, the superhero movie landscape changed forever. Make no mistake, 2008′s “Iron Man” is the one that started it all. It established Marvel Studios’ unexpected but insightful taste in directors with Jon Favreau. It showed their excellent eye for casting [...]

‘Battleship’ Stars Get A Blast From The Past

  • Posted on May 2, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Rihanna’s been singled out a lot lately for “Battleship” because it’s her acting debut, but that’s not really fair, is it? MTV News’ Josh Horowitz certainly didn’t think so. During “MTV First: Battleship,” he decided to take her co-stars on a trip down memory lane to look at their first gigs on the big screen. [...]

Hillary Clinton Thanks ‘Texts From Hillary’ Creators For ‘Many LOLZ’

Proving herself a good sport, Secretary of State creates her own submission for meme.
By John Mitchell

The Tumblr “Texts From Hillary” launched just one week ago, but it already has one very famous fan: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The site pairs a well-known picture of Clinton on her Blackberry with photos of other Washington politicos and celebrities on their mobile devices, adding jokey, text message-like captions. It has gone viral in a major way, and its sudden ubiquity earned creators Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe an invitation to the State Department to meet their muse.

Ever the good sport, Clinton is a fan of the meme just like everybody else and even created an entry of her own, which she autographed for Smith and Lambe, writing, “Adam — Thanks for the many LOLZ Hillary ‘Hillz.’ ”

“I don’t think anyone ever imagines that they’d create a meme like this and it becomes an overnight sensation,” Smith told Politico. “It’s just been a wild ride.”

The conceit of the site is that Clinton is a no-nonsense power player with a penchant for telling it like it is. In the various entries, she sends snappy, matter-of-fact quips to people including President Barack Obama, Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, House Speaker John Boehner, Arianna Huffington and the cast of “Pretty Little Liars.”

In response to a “text” from Mark Zuckerberg on the day Facebook purchased Instagram, asking, “Guess what I just bought?,” the fictitious version of Clinton responds, “A shirt with a big-boy collar?”

Her advice to Mitt Romney: “Drink.”

To a presumably NSFW photo from former New York Representative Anthony Weiner, she simply says, “Is that it?”

“It was great. She came out, she was all smiles, told us how much she likes the site and that people have been telling her all about it,” Smith said of his meeting with Clinton.

He went on to explain why the image of her texting had initially intrigued him. “It just captured this wonderful image of Hillary,” he said. “You definitely could tell she was in charge. You could tell she was getting stuff done. There was just no question that this woman was a total badass.”

Clinton is just the latest public figure to have a laugh at their own images by responding to memes created in their honor. Ryan Gosling has been a particularly good sport about his “Hey, Girl” meme, and even read some of the best for MTV News’ own Josh Horowitz.

Katy Perry Insists ‘Tired Of Being Famous’ Comments Were ‘In Jest’

Singer takes to Twitter to say her statement to Teen Vogue was taken out of context.

Katy Perry has taken to Twitter to clarify some recent comments that were published in her Teen Vogue cover story. The singer took issue with the way her quotes about the perils of fame appeared in the magazine.

In the issue, the singer is quoted as saying, “I’m tired of being famous already!” according to Yahoo! “But I’m not tired of creating. Fame is, I think, just a disgusting by-product of what I do. It’s quite a delicate creature — it’s a wild animal of sorts. It can love you, and then it can attack you.

“I still want to be as approachable and relatable as possible — when I meet fans and they’re crying, I’ll say, ‘Calm down, there’s nothing to cry about. I’m not going to bite you or attack you or grant you three wishes,’ ” she continued. ” ‘Let’s just hang out and have a good time.’ But really, I stopped focusing on what other people think a while ago. If you try to be everything to everyone, you’ll only end up completely confused.”

On Monday night, Perry tweeted that she had not been quoted correctly in terms of the tone of her statements.

“O the joy of something verbally said being taking out of complete context in PRINT. This is why there’s a continuous [love/hate] for the media world,” she wrote. “U see, the fame quote was spoken in jest (which is typical of me) BUT it’s not really about that. The fact is: my success, & u my fans have afforded me the most incredible luxury: to grow as an artist & a human. THAT, I could not be more grateful for.”

But it’s hardly the first time that Perry has used Twitter to explain interviews that she’s done or comments that she’s made. After being asked about dueting with Rihanna, she noted that she wanted the song to be “a little more brave” than Beyoncé and Shakira’s “Beautiful Liar.”

She blamed the press for misinterpreting what she said, firing off on Twitter, “F*** all y’all (press) dat thinks I dissed anyone, puhlez,” Perry wrote. “U havin a slow news day or what?! Get a life, cuz it’s not mine! #hoodratcominout.” The singer later clarified her comments in an interview with MTV News, calling the Beyoncé/Shakira video “sexy as hell.”

In 2010, after she tweeted that “using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke” shortly after Lady Gaga released her religion-heavy “Alejandro” video, she sat down with a French radio station to note that she didn’t mean it as a jab at Mother Monster.

“Everybody knows, I’ve said it maybe 100 times on my Twitter, I’m one of the biggest Lady Gaga fans and Madonna fans and Russell Brand fans,” she explained, noting that she sometimes doesn’t agree with the imagery and comments that Madge and Brand make in their art. “It’s just that, like, of course, some people have different viewpoints.”

Perry found herself in a similar situation in early 2011. Hours after Britney Spears dropped her “Hold It Against Me” video, a version of which included lots of product placement, she tweeted, “Do it with style and grace … Not so ‘In [your] face like some. [You] have to get creative with it. Some artists don’t care though, and you can tell.” The comments came after her friend and tourmate Marina of Marina and the Diamonds asked her about it.

After outlets began reporting that she had taken a dig at Spears, Perry took to Twitter to take a dig at the media, denying she was criticizing the singer. “Once AGAIN, stop pitting artist against artist for [your] sensational satisfaction,” she said. “Stick to what [you're] best [at]: lying, gossiping, exaggerating and overall lending a hand [to] the deterioration of a generation.”

One Direction Call Love From Katy Perry, Taylor Swift ‘Really Exciting’

Collaborating with Rihanna would be ‘incredible,’ guys tell MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

In addition to girls all across America, the fivesome of One Direction are also winning the hearts of some of Hollywood’s most A-list starlets and singers, who have been tweeting and talking about — and dancing to — the boy band now that they are keeping everyone Up All Night with their sunny pop tunes.

At the Kids’ Choice Awards in March, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were all spotted in the audience boogying to the band’s single “What Makes You Beautiful.”

And, Demi Lovato recently opened up about crushing on Niall Horan, saying, “He’s so adorable!” and later tweeting, “And I totally just downloaded some One Direction songs … #guilty.”

When MTV News caught up with the fellas, they opened up about all the famous-female attention they’ve been receiving lately. “How cool was that?” Louis Tomlinson said of the KCA love.

“[It's] really exciting, I suppose,” Liam Payne added. “And even following Katy Perry on the stage as well was a big thing for us. It’s just amazing to be in the same room as these sort of people, for us to just come over from England and just be involved.”

With so much love from celebrity fans, the guys are also feeling love for the ladies and appreciate the support they’ve been sending their way. Harry Styles explained, “I feel good. I think the people who were getting involved are all great performers, so for them to enjoy our performance was nice. … Katy Perry was there, Selena Gomez. There was Ashley Tisdale. Taylor Swift was dancing as well.”

As for which of those ladies would top their list of possible future collaborations, they said working with Perry or Rihanna would be “cool” and “incredible.”

While they didn’t mention working with Gomez in the future, One Direction had been rumored to be working with her beau, Justin Bieber, but they’ve since shot down talk that a duet is in the works.

“We actually went down to the studio to listen to some of Justin Bieber’s tracks,” Payne explained. “He invited us down, and we had a good listen, but there’s no real collaboration or anything.”

‘The Voice’ Results: Pip And Jamar Rogers Sail Through

But Team Adam’s Kim Yarbrough and Karla Davis and Team Cee Lo’s Tony Vincent and Erin Martin aren’t so lucky.

Another batch of four aspiring superstars, this time from Team Adam and Team Cee Lo, were eliminated on Tuesday night (April 10) during the second week of live shows on “The Voice.”

It was only 24 hours earlier that 12 contestants from the two teams battled it out before America and the judges to score a spot in the competition’s quarterfinals, which begin next week. Host Carson Daly was quick to announce (in random order) the three hopefuls from each team who scored the most votes, leaving the remaining group of contestants to battle it out in an effort to nab a “save” from their mentor.

Free from the chopping block on Team Adam included Mathai, Tony Lucca and Pip. It was the trio of K’s (Katrina Parker, Kim Yarbrough and Karla Davis) who were left to duke it out against for Adam’s save.

With new tunes and desire to win, Yarbrough continued to prove her belting strengths on Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight,” while Karla Davis opted to slow it down with Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Ultimately, it wasn’t too difficult to guess who Adam saved when Christina, Blake and Cee Lo all opted for Katrina and her rendition of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.”

“Rather than have it be a long, drawn-out thing. I’m not gonna be emotional about this decision,” the Maroon 5 frontman said. “Katrina, you’re the winner.”

Up next was the announcement from Daly that Juliet Simms, Jamar Rogers and James Massone had all received the most votes from the viewers at home, landing Tony Vincent, Cheesa and Erin Martin at the bottom of the totem pole and up for elimination.

Before you knew it, the sing-off was under way once again. Vincent brought mystique to his performance of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” but viewers saw Cheesa earn immediate praise for her cover of Celine Dion’s “All By Myself” with an immediate nod of approval from Cee Lo after the number. Erin Martin’s rendition of Ellie Goulding’s “Your Song” was acceptable, but not enough to overthrow the panel’s unanimous love of Cheesa.

Before all the eliminations even went down, “The Voice” welcomed Jessie J early into the broadcast, where the British belter brought fans in the audience to their feet with her hit “Domino,” with the help of Team Christina.
